WOW #36: Free Transform (Digital Tip)

I suppose we all start somewhere when we start scrapbooking. Right?! Well I’ll confess that I’m still learning a lot about the digital world. And I’ve made more than my share of mistakes. Those mistakes or extra steps, as I prefer to call them, have been opportunities to research a better way of doing things. One shortcut I learned from my sweet husband was how to use the “Free Transform” tool in Photoshop.

I was having a particular struggle with one of my layouts, and I was trying to perfectly size the image BEFORE putting it on my layout. I would choose an image size and then drag it over to my page. Too big. I’d delete the layer and then try again. Too small. I was near to tears when my husband entered my scrapbook room. Now he’s pretty used to my scrapbooking dilemmas so when he heard what I was trying to accomplish, he quickly and kindly showed me how to drag an item to my layout and THEN fix the size. A total “ta-da” moment!! (He was gracious enough not to rub it in. Bless his heart!)

So how does the “Free Transform” work? This quick button: “CTRL” and “t” allow you to drag the corners of the selected image to the desired size. It’s a great tool to become familiar with as you add more and more elements to your projects.

For this project, you will need a digital layout and an embellishment for which you wish to resize.

Step 1: Prepare the layout and open up the embellishment you wish to resize.

Step 2: Drag the element onto your layout.

Step 3: Making sure you’re on the layer which holds the element, click “CTRL” “T.” A little box will appear around your element.

Step 4: Try dragging one of the corners diagonally. Try dragging one of the side boxes horizontally. Try dragging the upper or lower boxes vertically. You will see the image change in size. But wait! If you drag the side or top or bottom boxes, the image becomes disproportionate.

Step 5: Maintaining proportions. This time, select a diagonal box and while holding the “SHIFT” key, drag the diagonal outward or inward until you have the element at the size you’d like. Easy, right?!! NOTE: Continue to hold the “SHIFT” key until you release the arrow you’re dragging!

Step 6: Once you’ve transformed your embellishment, you can select the move tool. A pop up window will appear. Select “apply.” Now you’re ready to move your embellishment wherever you’d like on this layout. NOTE: “Free Transform” works on photos, titles, and on a variety of other elements.

This quick key is going to save you lots of time in your digital designing. I know it’s saved me several headaches (and tears).

Here is my completed project. Note the original embellishment was much larger, but I shrunk it to fit within the parameters of my layout. So fun!

(Supplies: Summer’s Edge Paper No. 3, Paper No. 5 (recolored), Paper No. 6, Brush Stroke, Leather Flower Stitch embellishment, and the “Seasons Fade” brush (recolored) from the Summer’s Edge Kit by Scrap Originals for www.twopeasinabucket.com; Layered Templated Number 16 by Ali Edwards for www.designerdigitals.com)

I’d love to hear from you! Tell me one quick tip you have for digital designing. Perhaps we’ll share it in an upcoming “Work It Out Wednesday!”

Scrapbook Space: Carole Janson

Every once in a while I like to browse the internet for cool scrapbook spaces. I enjoy viewing the way my fellow scrapbookers store their items and surround themselves with creativity. I came across this particular space just a few weeks ago. But this isn’t a scrapbook room . . . it’s a scrapbooking shed! How cool is that?!!!

Here’s what Carole has to say about the shed:

“Actually it is in a shed in the backyard, It is a very big shed. lol !! I know it sounds weird right!! but honestly it is brilliant, my husband created me a room of my own, with a sliding door for access, I also have air-conditioning, 2 small TVs built into each side of the desk which you will see in the photos, placed at eye level so I can see my favorite shows also internet and phone, excellent lighting, [and] basically everything I need. My husband calls the main desk a work station; and all the shelving was custom made to suit the space, right down to my ribbon/stamping holder.”

Here is a photo of her desk:

Carole explains her storage process:

“My papers get stored in the bottom shelves which my darling husband designed for me, I knew I needed something low, so I could just sit in my scrapbooking chair and go through the papers in the shelves without any hassel, so easy.”

Here is her paper storage:

And here is how she stores her products:

“All my embellishments, well nearly all of them, are stored on my peg board which is amazing, I just pick what I need, open the packet up, get out how many brads or rub-ons etc., and then stick it up and put it back up onto the peg board, love it!   I also find nothing gets damaged because it is hanging up rather than shoved in a draw or box.”

Here is a photo of her product storage:

Carole shares a tip on deciding how to store your own items:

“Plan how you would like to have access to your products, do you want them on show like me or hidden, everyone is different, it is a personal choice, but really think about how you want to store everything, because this is the most important, I find if it takes to long to look for something I just can’t be bothered, so make it easy, and make sure your products don’t get damaged, lets face it we do love them, so we should look after them.”

Carole has several displays around her room for additional items such as stamps, completed projects, and other embellishments.

Her stamps:

A cupcake holder for embellishments:

And space for displaying completed items:

Carole enjoys scrapbooking at night and enjoys watching her favorite show while scrapbooking. She thought long and hard about how this space would best work and in the end I think she has a successfully creative space!

Thanks for sharing it with us Carole!
