This week’s card challenge has to be my favorite so far – you ladies are so resourceful, creative, outside-the-box thinkers, I could go on and on. Who knew what amazing things could be created from newspaper of all things? Let’s dive in and take a look shall we?
I’m loving the custom-made newspaper flower on this card by Dana Gustafson – but that’s only the beginning! There’s also a curly-q accent of newspaper dangling from the flower. Plus the scallops, the lace, the embossed background…WOW!
Ruffles are so “in” right now! That’s why I am particularly fond of this “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” card by Stephanie Jake. Who says ruffles can only be on skirts and shirts? They look great on cards too!

Die cut ‘em, ink ‘em, stamp ‘em, and layer ‘em – that’s the name of the game on this beautiful birthday card by Kandi Phillips.
Isn’t this card too cute? I love the “pom pom” flower of newspaper and the trailing wisps of magazine style paper which really add to the theme of flight!

Here’s an idea: if you want to save a favorite piece of patterned paper for a different project, newspaper is a great alternative! You can die cut into any shape, like this butterfly on Kristen Swain’s “I Love You” card.

Brenda Weaver went all out on her “I’m So Sorry” card. She took pages out of an old book, crumpled them up, spritzed them with glimmer mist, then punched multiple leaves out of them to adorn her tree. Lovely!
Here’s another beautiful take on a newspaper flower by Kelley Eubanks:

Valerie punched flowers from an old book she got at a yard sale (gotta love them yard sales!), then stitched them randomly onto her card base.
Dee says of her “Merry Christmas” card, “I created a mask by punching the Martha Stewart snowflake out of thick cardstock and then painted inside using crackle paint by Ranger. I really wanted to show warmth and texture.” I say, “Mission accomplished!”

Amy Heller – this flower is awesome, how did you make it? I, and lots of other people I’m sure, want to know! **UPDATED** Thanks Amy for the link to your blog with instructions, I’m off to try making one myself: http://paushdesign.blogspot.com/2009/11/smile-today.html

Lucy Abrams created a pair of elegant leaves for her flower embellishment by cutting them out of vintage bookprint paper and chalking them green for a realistic touch.

And finally, another oh-so-beautiful newspaper flower by Sally Sherfield, complete with torn edges, ink, and glitter.
Just like the episode of Project Runway which inspired this challenge, I was blown away by the results. I can’t wait to get my hands on some newspaper and start making flowers and ruffles to gussy up my next handmade card!
Moving on to this week’s challenge – Thanksgiving is right around the corner here in the good ol’ US of A. How about making some cute place cards so your guests know where they’re supposed to sit? Here’s an idea by Ashley Cannon Newell to get you started:
You know the drill! Please email your Thanksgiving place cards to paiget@scrapbooktrendsmag.com by next Friday the 13th (eeek!) and then I’ll post my faves as well as a issue new challenge. Until then, have a great weekend/week!

Great cards!!!
I am loving the ideas that you come up with! I’ve been teaching the kids about recycling and going green, so using magazines and other printed materials to incorporate in the cards is a wonderful way of doing this. I especially love the curly q accents. Can’t get any more adorable!
wow – those are some great ideas with just plain old newspaper!

Who knew how cute newsprint could be?
Such inspiration! As a big fan of Project Runway, can’t wait to try some of the newspaper embellishment ideas. Add a few buttons and stitching……instant embellishments!
Brenda Wever’s card with newspaper and Glimmer Mist: how much simpler could it be? And you could change the seasons with the color of Mist you use…I see autumn with several colors! Beautiful job.
Thanks Paige I’m really thrilled that you included my card on your blog. I feel really honoured as there where obviously some amazing cards in the challenge.
Thank you so much, Paige, for showing 2 of my cards! So many beautiful creations!! :)
As for the tutorial, I took direct inspiration from Irina’s creation on Project Runway, as well as her description of how she created her ruffled look (BIG fan of Project Runway, here!). All the details are here in this post on my blog: http://paushdesign.blogspot.com/2009/11/smile-today.html.
The same technique was used for the “fly” card, except I trimmed the flower down overall, cut several “strips” into the paper and shaped it with shears until I got my desire effect – voila, simple!
Oh WO… love all the awesome ideas for using the newsprint!
I love all the ideas for using printed newspaper and old books. I frequently cut words out of an old Heidi book but the butterflies and flowers are really creative.
Love all the ideas!
Can’t wait to try all the ideas!
